Diocesan Environment Sunday

29.05.08 13:51

Diocesan Environment Sunday falls on June 8. The day seeks to provide an annual common focus and catalyst for parishes to reflect on our environment and to address issues and actions that we can take both individually and at a parish level to move towards a more sustainable future.

As in previous years, this year's date has been chosen to link with the United Nations World Environment Day on 5 June.

The theme for this year's World Environment Day is CO2 Kick The Habit : Towards a Low Carbon Economy.  This theme is linked very closely to worldwide concerns about global warming associated with increasing greenhouse gas emissions.  The theme highlights the need for us all to become informed and to consider how we each might act to address some of the inevitable concerns and consequences, by seeking to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.

The Secretary General of the United Nations has urged all governments and communities to:
“...recognise that we are all part of the solution..whether we are an individual, an organisation, a business or a government, there are many steps we can take to reduce our carbon footprint.”

The Environment Protection Canon, passed by General Synod in October 2007 calls on each diocese to take action to reduce its environmental footprint. This Canon will come before our Synod in October for endorsement. Diocesan Environment Sunday offers an opportunity to demonstrate a proactive approach to supporting this Canon.

We invite all parishes and other diocesan organisations to recognise and endorse some of the United Nation's concerns about the future effects of climate change and other pressures on our planet.

The June edition of The Anglican Encounter also focuses on the environment.
