The Right Reverend Dr Peter Stuart

Born: Bishop Peter was born in England in 1963. He came to Australia in 1971.  He has lived in Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia as well as NSW.

Education: He is a graduate from the University of Tasmania (Bachelor of Commerce), the Melbourne College of Divinity (Bachelor of Divinity) and the University of Technology Sydney (Master of Management). In 2011 he was awarded a Doctorate in Education from Flinders University. His thesis was entitled “Towards Better Church Practice in Clergy Education and Decision Making. . He prepared for ordained ministry at Trinity College in Melbourne. 

Prior Ministry: Bishop Peter came to Newcastle in 2009. Prior to becoming a bishop he was involved in parish and diocesan ministries including ministry development, theological education and administration. He has served parishes in rural, suburban and inner-city settings. From 2002 until 2009 he was the Principal of St Barnabas Theological College Adelaide where he taught practical ministry, missiology and sociology for ministry. His passion for social justice and inclusion led to his Chairing of the Julia Farr Association in Adelaide, a non-government organisation serving the disability community.

Some of his portfolios in Newcastle:  Bishop Peter shares with Bishop Brian the pastoral care and support of parishes. He says, ‘One of the privileges of episcopal ministry is to meet with congregations and their leadership Sunday by Sunday’. In 2011, the Bishops will be focussing on conversations with ministry leaders as part of their parish visits. Bishop Peter chairs the Samaritans Foundation, Lakes Grammar – An Anglican School, the Examining Chaplains and the Newcastle School of Theology for Ministry.

For enjoyment: He says, ‘I relish the opportunity to spend time with my family and sharing in their enjoyment of musical theatre and sport. I enjoy watching political drama and reading political biographies.’
